A CABBY was jailed for three weeks yesterday after trying to bribe an auxiliary policeman who caught him running a red light.
Ng Liew Kong, 69, offered $50 to the officer who stopped him outside the Changi Airport Budget Terminal.
He was also fined $800 yesterday for ignoring the traffic signal.
The court heard that Staff Sergeant Isaac Pandian LPP Raja was on patrol duty at the terminal in February this year when he saw Ng’s SMRT taxi drive through a pedestrian crossing without stopping for the red light.
The officer and a colleague from Certis Cisco approached the cabby and asked for his identity card, said Deputy Public Prosecutor Gordon Oh.
Ng asked to be given a chance, but Staff Sgt Isaac ignored him. After taking down his particulars, he issued him a traffic summons.
The cabby again begged the officer to “kasi chance”, or “give chance”.
The staff sergeant showed him a schedule of traffic offences, which indicated that the one he had committed carried a $200 fine and 12 demerit points. But Ng continued to ask for another chance.
When Staff Sgt Isaac repeated the consequences of beating a red light, the cabby opened his left palm to reveal a $50 note.
The officer twice told him to keep the money but Ng persisted in trying to bribe him, the court heard.
Under the Prevention of Corruption Act, he could have been jailed for up to five years, fined up to $100,000, or both. For beating the red light, he could have been jailed for up to three months or fined up to $1,000.
